Olympic National Park, Washington - September 2017

My last of three posts about my visit to Washington state last Labor Day weekend. On my final day there we made the spontaneous decision to drive to the Olympic National Park to visit some of my sister and BIL's favorite places.

I'd visited them many times, but we'd not yet had the opportunity (or good weather) to make the trip out there together so we decided to go for it.

This was our route:

All told, we (and by "we" I mean "BIL") drove 481 miles and were gone 19 hours!

We left before sunrise and got the Coupeville ferry to Port Townsend. Gorgeous sunrise from the ferry.

Our first stop was Hurricane Ridge where we friended a chipmunk.

Some views on the drive back down.

Mt. Baker

Next stop was Lake Crescent where sis and BIL had spent the first part of their honeymoon. And we were out on the kayak again! Sis sat this one out so BIL finally got some time out on the water.

Water so clear!

This lake was so clear and the weather was just right for a swim (and I'm not usually one to swim in lakes on the count of murky/muddy bottoms).

After the swim, sis wanted her turn out in the kayak so we explored another part of the lake.

It had been a few hours and we wanted to make it all the way to the west side of the peninsula to Rialto Beach so we got back on the road. What a beautiful (and photogenic!) beach. The coastal forest here results in a lot of driftwood and the sea stacks right off the coast make such a impact.

Our dinner spot - River's Edge in La Push - left something to be desired in the service category, but the view was unrivaled.

And then as the sun set, we headed back east all the way to Burlington. What a fabulous day! I'm so fortunate to have friends and family who live in some many different parts of the world and are up for exploring them together. Forever grateful.
